about

There is love
There is hate
These are stones
We impersonate

Now I can tell the story of the man who wrote those words and inspired the narrative connections of this album. He explained the quote:

'I am insecure (social insecurity). I am the answer you keep questioning. Sooner or later the truth liberates us. We become two talking heads, in a deep sleep, under years of protest.'

It would be fair to say that he was under duress when he shared these ideas with me. As one of the readers of Uqbar and Tlon (his cleverly titled newsletter about a reformed earth) I was not surprised by the challenging statements. His explanation, in particular, betrays his ongoing struggle at the intersection of madness, infatuation and revolution. I do not believe that we will ever know what was really happening. Just as each of these themes were concluding in his life, their inevitable outcomes destroyed him. For as much as his writings contain hope, they are ultimately the words of a doomed man. He had condemned himself in pursuit of one goal, one almost mystical transformation. He was aiming for a moment in the sun. Instead he disappeared into the unwritten history of humankind. These songs, then, are his testament. They contain many of his words and most of his sentiments. As the composer it was my intention to capture the intense mystery of his life and to share his core message. I could never explain what his life meant to me. He once wrote to his beloved,

'You play around inside my heart like a child out of control'

This comes close to summarizing his effect on his followers. .We were never sure of the truth. Creating this album was emotionally draining. It will stand as my answer to him. I leave these, his final words, scribbled on the pages of his favourite story,

Ride away
On the road to salvation
Freedom
Emancipation

The Soviet Influence Limehouse, Ontario

What do you get when you mix two ounces of Joe Strummer-like political anger topped off with the guitar tones of Johnny Marr? The Soviet Influence: a socialist alt-rock trio that appeal to nostalgic listeners while refusing to become stale, combining 60s-era protest themes with the post punk, new wave and modern styles of the everchanging indie rock genre. ... more
